Concerns and Complaints
The Cairnmillar Institute aims to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment to allow you to feel supported in your studies. All comments, concerns and feedback are welcome.
If you have comments or concerns about any aspect of your studies or time at Cairnmillar we encourage you to contact your Course or Program Coordinator in the first instance.
If you do not feel comfortable or are unable to contact one of your Course Coordinators, you can contact the Dean or another member of the leadership team.
There are also regular anonymised course, unit, and semester surveys where you are welcome and encouraged to confidentially share your opinions on a regular basis. Please make the most of these opportunities. Your feedback helps us know what is working as well as what we can improve.
Complaints
A complaint is a problem or concern raised by a student who considers they have been wronged because of an action, decision or omission within the control or responsibility of the Cairnmillar Institute.
Grievances
A grievance is a matter to be investigated according to formal grievance processes. This includes matters relating to allegations of misconduct where disciplinary action against a student or staff member may be the outcome of an investigation. See also: SSP007 Student Grievance Policy
Before you submit a complaint or grievance
Step 1: Attempt to resolve the issue informally
Before submitting a formal complaint or grievance, you should attempt to resolve the issue informally in the area where the complaint arose, unless there is a compelling reason why this is not appropriate, for example, where your complaint involves misconduct, or if you have safety or wellbeing concerns. The formal process requires you to outline the history of the complaint or grievance and, if appropriate, your attempts to resolve it informally.
Step 2: Raise the issue
If you are unable to raise or resolve the issue with the person involved, or in the area where the complaint arose, familiarise yourself with the processes, policies, and services available to help you raise an issue or concern.
Step 3: Escalate a complaint or submit a grievance
If you are unable to progress or resolve the issue by following the first two steps, you may submit a complaint or grievance in writing to the Dean.
It is important that you consult the policy for Student Grievance Policy when making your grievance or complaint.
