Notes on Acronyms and Post-nominals

  • Graduates should avoid ambiguity and abide by all professional standards and regulations when representing their qualifications
  • The abbreviation Psych should only be used for Psychology degrees, never for Psychotherapy. You may be accused of breaching the law if you are seen to be representing yourself as a psychologist or as holding psychology qualifications if you do not.
  • Psychology graduates should generally avoid using Psy as this is normally used by Psychiatry/Psychiatrists but this is a convention only and may not apply for some qualifications/situations.
  • You normally list postnominals from highest AQF level to lowest, with any professional memberships last (e.g. PhD, MC&P, BA, MAPS) – refer to relevant style guide if necessary
  • Postnominals can normally only be used after you have officially completed your course, and for some purposes/style guides only allow them after conferral e.g. graduation (see also Completion and Conferral)
