Student Mentors
Student Mentors are mostly Masters students who have volunteered to help support Honours and other students with formal or informal mentoring. This is especially helpful for Honours students who want feedback on Masters applications and advice about current student challenges. Sometimes just knowing a student who is a few years ahead in the process can be helpful.

Mentor Training and Experience
Mentors are offered at least one specialist training session to help learn key mentoring and leadership skills. You will also have support from an academic staff member, the school admin team and your mentorship trainers including our very own Executive Director and Organisational Psychologist, Prof Kathryn von Treuer.
Mentors also attend the Student Leadership Group once a month.
Time Commitment for Mentors
The commitment will vary depending on the mentor and their mentees.
There is a three hour training session for all mentors and student leaders at the start of the year.
Additional availability to support other students would be the mentor’s discretion. Mentors also attend the Student Leadership Group.
Normally, you would meet with your mentees a few times through the year although some may prefer to work entirely by email. Numbers per mentor depend on how many mentors we have and how actively engaged the Honours cohort are with their mentoring. But, again, this will be negotiable–we understand that Masters students have limited time available and anything you can offer is welcome and appreciated. This program is a student lead initiative and we encourage the mentors to take active responsibility for organising and defining the program each year.
Recognition of achievement
All students who attend the Leadership Training will receive a Certificate of Attendance.
Students who are active mentors or members of the Student Leadership Group will receive an additional Letter of Recognition for your leadership contribution and peer support skills.
Can I count mentoring hours for placement?
Not normally, but you should discuss this with your Placement Coordinator or placement supervisor if you think it might apply.
Other forms of support
Student mentors are not intended to supply study skills or mental health support. Cairnmillar has a number of professional support services available for students and can provide referrals and recommendations for additional services. See: Student Support Services FAQs
