This information is intended to clarify the conversion procedure for those students in the second year of the Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) who are applying to transition to the Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology).
Note: you must apply and have your conversion confirmed by no later than census in your fourth semester of enrolment (i.e. before census for your CLN654 enrolment as this unit cannot convert across).
Students who wish to apply to convert to the Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) must submit an application by the end of the application intake to commence in Semester 1 of the academic year. Applying to transfer is only eligible for those students who meet the requirements and who are in their second year of the Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) course. In addition to the myCMI form, you will need to submit a course application via Paradigm for the Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) by selecting application summary – new application. Complete the details as prompted to apply for the Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) course.
This application must comprise the following elements:
- A completed MPsych to DPsych Application form (which details plans for the necessary expansion of your MPSYCH thesis so that it can meet the requirements of the DPSYCH thesis). To access the form, please go to: MPsych to DPsych Application Form.
Criteria for course application in the application portal:
- A brief CV (maximum 1-2 pages) with details of relevant work experience, training and volunteering.
- A brief personal statement, of not more than 500 words, about why you wish to study the Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) and what makes you a desirable candidate.
- A brief covering letter addressed to the Course Coordinator of the Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology). This letter should provide the contact details of one professional and one academic referee, who will each be able to speak to some of the information provided in your statement and CV. It is recommended that you approach your latest clinical supervisor to be your professional referee.
Your application, as well as your academic transcript, will then be examined to determine your eligibility. To be eligible for entry to the Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology), you must have a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 80 in the Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) and a demonstrated capacity to study and practice at a suitably high level.
Upon review of your application, you will be contacted and advised of your eligibility to proceed with your application. If your application is deemed unsuccessful at this point, you will need to continue with the submission of your thesis so that it meets the thesis requirements and submission dates of the Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology).
If your application is deemed successful, you will be asked to attend an interview with a selection committee comprised of relevant academic staff. This interview will typically take place in late September or early October. At this interview, you will be expected to give a 10–20-minute presentation on your existing research and your plans to expand this research. You will also be asked questions related to the information you have provided in your personal statement and CV, as well as your suitability to manage the particular demands of the Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology).
Successful applicants will be ranked on an order of merit basis and will be advised of the outcome of their application once all candidates have been interviewed. Should your application not be successful, you will need to proceed with the submission of a thesis that meets the requirements and submission dates for the Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology).
Please note that places in the Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) are limited and you will be best served by preparing as strong an application as you can.
