The following provides information about the process for sourcing and allocating placement for both self-sourced and CMI-sourced students in the Master of Clinical Psychology (Post-Registration) course.
Students are encouraged to provide prospective placement agencies with an Introduction Letter to placement agency contacts and supervisors to facilitate their understanding of the course and placement requirements. There are two options for arranging placements and supervision in the Master of Clinical Psychology (Post Registration) course; self-sourced and CMI-sourced placements. You can find information about the fee structure for these placements here. In each option CMI will provide placement coordination for students.
CMI-sourced placements
In CMI-sourced placements, the Cairnmillar Institute sources a suitable placement opportunity and provides supervision (individual and group) with suitably trained and experienced psychologists. These placements are available to students’ undertaking placements in Victoria only.
Students will liaise with the placement coordinators at least 6 months prior to the beginning of the semester. Please note that while all efforts will be made to facilitate students undertaking placements in settings aligned with their clinical interests, however, the priority in placing students is ensuring that they meet the clinical competencies required for the successful completion of the program. Most placements require students to attend an interview. Selection for placements can be very competitive and selection of students by agencies is beyond the control of the CMI staff.
CMI-sourced process and responsibilities
Self-sourcing placements
Self-sourced placements are where the student sources a suitable placement opportunity and supervision. Students selecting this option are responsible for funding their own supervision fees and any fees charged by the organisation where the student in undertaking the placement. Students undertaking placements outside Victoria will need to be self-sourced placement students. It is important to be aware that to meet the course requirements students will need to undertake a diverse range of placement settings, client presentations and across the lifespan.
Students selecting this option will be required to complete a placement proposal and CMI will assess and approve the placement and supervision arrangements before the student can commence placement. CMI placement coordinators assess the placement proposal against requirement course competencies and learning needs (e.g., diversity of placement experiences) to ensure compliance with APAC and the Psychology Board of Australia. Please note that where the placement agency contact and/or supervisors are previously known to the student then you will need to complete a conflict of interest form.
