Guide to Inter-Library Loans

Requesting an Inter-Library Loan

Inter-Library Loans are currently limited to:

  • 30 requests for staff per year
  • 30 requests for postgraduate students, per year
  • 15 requests for undergraduate students, per year
  • PhD Students, who have unlimited requests

Before requesting an InterLibrary Loan:

Before you place an InterLibrary loan please check:

  1. Is it available in our physical or online collections?
Search our Databases & eResources or Library Catalogue to locate materials you have access to.
  2. Have you searched online?
If it is available for free online, you may be able to access to it immediately as authors and publishers sometimes make their work available for free through Open Access Resources.

Note:  If you are searching Google, locate an article and hit a paywall, double check our Databases & eResources or Library Catalogue to see if the journal is one we subscribe to and is available in full text though Cairnmillar Library resources.    If you require assistance on how to search for resources within the library, please contact the Library and we will be happy to facilitate a training session with you.

Requesting an InterLibrary Loan:

  1. Once you have searched and are unable to locate the required item in the library or Google submit a request via our online InterLibrary Loan Request Form.
  2. When the Cairnmillar Library receives your request, we will search through the Libraries Australia Document Delivery (LADD) database to locate the Library(s) that hold the resource you are wanting and place the request.
  3. The Majority of requests will be allocated as Core requests with a turnaround time of 25 working days.

As a result of Covid 19 there may be delays or unavailability with some requested items due to library staff shortages, reduced levels of service and postage delays.

Please Note – The more information you can provide us the better. This in turn will enable us to provide the lending library with accurate information in a timely manner, which will result in getting the item to you more quickly.

Books – Please include title, author date, publisher, and the ISBN (International Standard Book Number). This is a unique commercial book identifier number located on the barcode at the back of the book. The ISBN is used to differentiate one edition of a book from another and to identify the publishers of each edition of a book.

If you require only part of the book, please include the title, author date, publisher, chapter number, title of chapter, and/or page number range.

Journal Article – Please include Journal title, article title, author, volume number, issue number, date, and page range.
