Survey Software at Cairnmillar: Qualtrics

At Cairnmillar we provide staff and students doing academic research projects with a free Qualtrics account to develop and deliver online surveys.

Best practice – Supervisor creates blank survey and shares it

We recommend that supervisors initially create the survey, name it and then share it with student(s) via the collaborate function.  Then the students can develop the survey as required after it is shared with you. But as the supervisor (primary researcher) initially created it – they will have primary control over the survey and can control data access (which will be important as supervisors will always listed as primary researcher on the HREC approval).

Troubleshooting

Qualtrics is very similar to surveygizmo so most staff should be fine but here is a nice 10min tutorial.

If any students need an account they can self-enrol with the instructions below:

  1. Navigate to this link: https://cairnmillar.syd1.qualtrics.com
  2. Click on “Don’t have an account?”
  3. Enter their email address and enter access code wCTvi
  4. Click “Sign me up” to create their account

Note that the minimum password requirements are enforced for this platform.

Passwords must be at least 14 characters long and contain at least

  • 1 upper case letter
  • 1 lower case letter
  • 1 number
  • 1 special character (!@#$%^&* or a space)

Two-Factor authentication has also been enabled on the Qualtrics platform. You will be prompted to set it up when you log in the first time. The process is similar as used for your student Microsoft account and your Paradigm account.

  1. You will be shown a QR code on the screen.
  2. On the Authenticator App, click the + sign in the top bar
  3. Select Other Account
  4. Scan the QR code. Make sure you have allowed the app to access your camera
  5. The account will be added to the app and a code will be shown. This code changes every 30 seconds.
  6. Enter the code into the Verification Code box on your screen

2020 Changes

All current surveygizmo accounts will only stay active until October 2020. If you are planning on running any online surveys with students in 2020 or later then Qualtrics is the one to use now.

Other survey software?

Note: while from 2019 onward Survey Gizmo surveys should be phased out of use and will not be supported at Cairnmillar from 2020 onward. Survey Monkey accounts are not supported for academic research.

Qualtrics is also sometimes said or mistyped as Qualtrix but they are the same software.
