Purpose
The purpose of the Cairnmillar Institute Library is to support Cairnmillar students and staff with their education, study and research requirements and provide equitable access to Library materials, facilities, and resources for all users of the Cairnmillar Institute Library.
The aim of this document is to outline general conditions and terms of usage required for staff and students of the Cairnmillar Institute to observe when entering, accessing, or using the Cairnmillar Institute Library materials, facilities, and resources.

Library Membership
The following individuals are eligible for membership to the Cairnmillar Library:
- All students currently enrolled at the Cairnmillar Institute.
- All staff currently employed with the Cairnmillar Institute.
Conduct
- All users of the Cairnmillar Institute Library are expected to respect the rights of others.
- All users of the Cairnmillar Institute Library have the right to study, research, discover and access Library resources, facilities and materials in an environment that is safe and free from unnecessary disturbance or interruption.
- Phones are allowed within the Library, however for the comfort of other library users, the Cairnmillar Institute Library request that ring tones be turned down or set to vibrate for the duration of their attendance within the library.
- All users of the Cairnmillar Institute Library are expected not to engage in any activity that may damage library resources, facilities, or equipment.
- Food and drink are allowed in the Library, however care must be taken when eating and drinking while using Library resources and facilities.
- No filming or photography is allowed within the Library unless written permission has been sought and given by the Cairnmillar Institute Librarians.
- All users of the Cairnmillar Institute Library are expected to comply with these Terms of Use.
Library Resources
- A current staff or student card is required in order to obtain access to the Library collections. Library users will not be able to borrower library resources without a current card.
- Library resources which are available for loan must be issued before being removed from the Library.
- The Cairnmillar Institute Librarians will determine library functions including, but not limited to, loan periods, fees, fines, renewals and recall of library resources.
- Once items are borrowed the borrower is responsible for the condition and care of the items, and ensuring items are returned to the library either on, or before their due date.
- Occasionally, library resources on loan may need to be recalled. Patrons will be notified of a change in the due date. It is the borrowers responsibly to ensure items are returned in a timely manner.
- If library resources are damaged while being utilised, for example, drinks being spilled on books, the Cairnmillar Institute Library may request a fee to be paid for the cost of repairing or replacing the item, as well as a non-refundable processing charge.
- If library resources are returned in a damaged condition, the Cairnmillar Institute Library may request a fee to be paid for the cost of repairing or replacing the item, as well as a non-refundable processing charge.
- If library resources are not returned, for example, lost while out on loan, the Cairnmillar Institute Library may request a fee to be paid for the cost of replacing the item, as well as a non-refundable processing charge.
- Outstanding fines or fees may result in a block being placed on the users Library account.
- Correspondence or communication between the Library and a library user will be sent to the Cairnmillar Institute email address recorded in the user’s record on the Library Management System (LMS) ALMA.
- Library users accessing Cairnmillar Institute Library resources and collections, both physical and electronic, must comply with legislative requirements, licensing agreements and copyright obligations and only use electronic resources for the purposes of research, education, study, or personal use.
- All users of the Cairnmillar Institute Library must not record, print, scan, reproduce, copy, or download library resources in any way that infringes licencing requirements or the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth). Inter-Library Loans
Inter-library loans are available to Cairnmillar Academic Staff and Cairnmillar Institute PhD Students.
Definitions
For the purpose of this document:
- The term All users of the Cairnmillar Institute Library is interchangeable with Library User/s or Borrower/s.
Encompasses all staff employed with the Cairnmillar Institute that hold a current staff card and all students currently enrolled with the Cairnmillar Institute who hold a current student card.
- The term The Cairnmillar Institute Library is interchangeable with Library.
Encompasses all library facilities, library space, resources, and materials – both physical and electronic, equipment, furniture, computers, photocopiers, as well as Library Management System (LMS) Ex Libris – Alma/Primo.
- The term Library Resources is interchangeable with Library Materials, Library Items or Items.
Encompasses all library physical resources and materials as well as electronic resources and materials, including, but not limited to, books, journals, pamphlets, tests, DVDs, databases, and open access resources.
