Can MPP students transfer to the MPsych(Clinical) program?

Current MPP students can apply to transfer into the second year of the Clinical program after completion of their MPP requirements, and are eligible for admission based on the following criteria:

  • Minimum 75% WAM across MPP course
  • Minimum 70% mark in 4th year thesis unit
  • Selection criteria will also be informed by feedback from staff regarding placement and most recent studies, including possible review of 4th year and undergraduate results, as well as feedback from admissions interviews

Admitted students will receive credit transfer for 7 MPP units, which will map across to 6 Clinical units, as per the following diagram:

MPP to Clinical pathway

Interested students can apply to transfer by submitting a course application for the Clinical program in the Cairnmillar Application Portal through their Paradigm account, and more information on how to apply can be found on the Cairnmillar website. Students can also contact the Applications team for further advice or consultation via email at applications@cairnmillar.edu.au.

Applying to the MPsych(Clinical) after MPP

In addition to transfer opportunities, graduates of the Master of Professional Practice (MPP) and Master of Professional Psychology Practice (MPPP) 5+1 programs can apply or re-apply to the Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) in the following year.

Places in Clinical psychology programs like the Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) and the Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) are very limited in Australia and  therefore entry to these programs is extremely competitive. However, students who have previously been on the waitlist for the Clinical program are very likely to receive an earlier Clinical offer following an MPP. Students who were not interviewed or were not wait-listed in the prior year still have a reasonable chance of being ranked for an offer following an MPP, if results and other factors have improved.

You will still need a high H2A average results or better (75%+) in the MPP in order to apply or re-apply for the Clinical program at the end of the MPP, and we consider many factors, such as interview performance and other experience, before making offers.

MPP to MPsych(Clinical) Credit and RPL

There are agreed RPL arrangements between the Cairnmillar MPP and Cairnmillar MPsych(Clinical) programs. The RPL available will depend on when you undertook your MPP program at Cairnmillar. RPL will be granted automatically to Cairnmillar MPP graduates in the Cairnmillar MPsych(Clinical) program for those who are admitted. External MPPs will need to seek personalised advice and make a separate application for RPL (see: Applying for RPL).

Clinical Program Credit for MPP transfers

MPP students applying to transfer into the second year of the Clinical course after the first year of MPP studies are eligible for recognition of prior learning based on the following mapping structure:

Clinical Program Credit for 2021 MPP

If you are made a Clinical offer at a later stage and had completed an MPP in 2021 or later, then you will get recognition of prior learning (RPL) credit for at least 4 units and normally for the first intensive/observational placement and first formal placement units also.

The following credit equivalency arrangements apply between the 2021 MPP and the current MPsych(Clinical) and DPsych(Clinical) programs.

MPP 5+1 Units Equivalent Clinical Psych Units Notes
MPP501 Professional Practice Issues CLN503 Professional Practice and Professional Ethics

The following credit equivalency arrangements apply between the 2020 MPP and the current MPsych(Clinical) and DPsych(Clinical) programs.

We recommend that students who get RPL for MPLc1 still attend the MPLc1 intensive workshops if possible even though assessment and observational placement will not be required. Students who still want to undertake the observational placement at Monash Health will need to make a special request to decline RPL for MPLc1 so that you can enrol in it instead. Contact education@cairnmillar.edu.au for further advice should this situation apply to you.

Clinical Program Credit for 2019 MPP/P

If you are made a Clinical offer at a later stage and had completed an MPP in 2019 then you would get recognition of prior learning (RPL) credit for at least 4 units and normally for the first formal placement also. The following credit equivalency arrangements apply between the 2019 MPP and the current MPsych(Clinical) and DPsych(Clinical) programs.

MPP 5+1 Units Equivalent Clinical Psych Units Notes
GPE1 Professional Practice Issues CLN503 Professional Practice and Professional Ethics
GDT1 Psychological Assessment, Diagnostic Testing and Interview Competencies CLN502 Psychological Assessment, Diagnostic Testing and Interview Competencies
GCB1 Cognitive Behavioural and Internal Process Interventions CLN501 Cognitive Behavioural and Internal Process Interventions
GSC1 Psychopathology CLN602 Adult Psychopathology and Intervention Credit arrangements TBC
GPL1 and GPL2 Supervised Placement 1 and 2 CLN561 Supervised Clinical Placement B Earlier MPP students may be able to cross-credit GPL1 + GPP1 for this unit. Additional assessment may apply for earlier versions of the course.

Graduates of earlier versions of the Cairnmillar MPP or Graduate Diploma of Professional Psychology (GDPP) may need to go through a more rigorous assessment process but will normally be allowed similar credit arrangements. Credit or partial credit (for GDPP studies) may be possible for the GHP1 (Health Psychology) unit into the MHP1 (Health Psychology) unit.

Duration of MPsych(Clinical) with MPP Credit

New students admitted to the Clinical program may be eligible to receive transfer credits for the MPP units as per the above mapping. With potential approved transfer credits, the remaining units may take up to a year and a half to complete the Clinical course, though extra time may be required to complete the course depending on student progress (e.g., in progressing in research or meeting placement requirements), or in order to lessen the loading (as students will have 62.5 credit points in semester 2).

Master of Clinical Psychology (Post-registration) – Clinical Endorsement Bridging Program

Another option to consider for gaining clinical endorsement is the new post-registration option. See: Master of Clinical Psychology (Post-registration) – Clinical Endorsement Bridging Program

MPP and MPPP graduates will not normally get any RPL credit for the Master of Clinical Psychology (Post Registration). This is because the equivalent foundational units already covered in your MPP are not part of the Master of Clinical Psychology (Post Registration) program.
