Students can get involved in Academic Governance at Cairnmillar by becoming a student representative on the Academic Board and The Teaching and Learning Committee.
Each Academic year, two (2) student representatives are elected to be on the Academic Board and the Teaching & Learning Committee.
Nominations for the 2026 Student Representatives are now CLOSED.
Your new representatives for Academic Board are:
- Student Rep #1 Eliza Ross-Smith
- Student Rep #2 Dilek Demir Jalil
Your new representatives for the Teaching and Learning Committee are:
- Student Rep #1 Dorsa Abdolalipourghodsi
- Student Rep #2 Danelle Priddy
We encourage all interested students to consider getting involved in other aspects of student leadership, and don’t hesitate to reach out to Student Services or your faculty teams for more opportunities.
How the Elections Work
Elections are held by electronic ballot and all enrolled students are eligible to vote. The Student Services Manager is normally the Returning Officer. Nominations will be called by email and a CANVAS announcement, and more information will be posted here when elections are active.
Two Academic Board and Teaching and Learning Committee Student Representatives are elected at the start of the academic year and serve for a one- or two-year term. Students’ first meeting will be the second meeting of the year. Their last meeting will be the first meeting of the following year, if they are still an enrolled student.
Academic Board and Teaching & Learning Committee Student Rep Election
If only two nominations are received from a cohort then both nominees will be elected immediately to represent the cohort.
If more than two nominations are received for the vacant positions, an electronic ballot will be held. Only enrolled students will be eligible to vote in the ballot. Nominations for the 2026 Student Representatives are now CLOSED.
More information about the election and the voting ballot, including information about candidates, will be sent to students after nominations close, should a vote be required.
What is involved in being a student rep?
Elected student representatives will be part of the Academic Board and the Teaching and Learning Committee, serving a one or two year term. However, students do have the option of only choosing to be a representative at one of these meetings if they prefer.
A student reps role while attending these meetings is to bring a student’s perspective to the deliberations of these high-level governing bodies of Cairnmillar. Having the voice of students at Academic Board and the Teaching and Learning Committee is vital.

Student Reps on Course Advisory Committees (CAC)
Each course or program of study has a Course Advisory Committee (CAC) which is a sub-committee of the Academic Board convened to advise on course quality and developments.
The CAC is chaired by the Course Chair who is normally also the official Program Coordinator. A CAC is defined and empowered by their terms of reference (TOR) document and membership can vary depending on the needs and structure of the course. The CAC always has at least one student representative and may have more in larger or more complex program (e.g. a first year and a second year rep). Most CACs will allow the representative role to be shared by co-reps but the reps would normally only have one vote between them.
Students normally serve for a one or two year term and there are two CAC meetings each year.
Talk to your Course and Program Coordinator to find out who your CAC rep is or how to apply.
Class Reps and Other Student Feedback
Some courses or teachers also have a class rep for each unit. Please contact your teacher for information on if your class has a student rep and how to contact them.
You also have a number of other options for giving feedback about your course, your classes or any other aspect of you Cairnmillar experience. See also: Feedback and Complaints
