Students need to have applied and received back their checks at least 3 weeks prior to commencing the first day of placement in preparation to submitting to Sonia Online for approval by the placement team.
Provisional Registration
Please submit a valid AHPRA Registration to Sonia Online by the specified due date. Note: Post Registration (ClinPsych) students – will submit their general AHPRA registration certificate. All psychology students going on placement are required to hold provisional registration with AHPRA. This requirement is not required by counselling and psychotherapy students. Applications to AHPRA can take up to 10 weeks to be processed. Student must apply ASAP as the Institute cannot request any kind of fast-tracking on your behalf. AHPRA will not reject your application if there is missing information but instead will contact you explaining there may be further evidence you need to supply. Remember to watch out for any emails. Apply here: https://www.psychologyboard.gov.au/Registration/Forms.aspx or http://www.psychologyboard.gov.au/Registration/Provisional.aspx Click here for the AHPRA Provisional Registration fees (note: the registration fee is an AHPRA cost and not included in your tuition fees). NOTE: due to a glitch in AHPRA’s online form, when filling in your application, the start date must be 14 days from the date of submission or higher even if the enrolment letter indicated your start date was prior to that date.
If you allow your Provisional Registration expires while you’re on placement, your placement will cease until your registration is renewed. Take note of your expiry date to avoid this from happening.
Please Note: The original Provisional Registration Certificate will be retained by the student (and a copy submitted to CMI, which may at a later date be requested directly by the host organisation conducting the placement.

Overseas Students AHPRA Registration
There are several steps involved as part of the application for provisional registration for overseas students: Students are required to submit an APOS-76 form. Prior to completing this form, AHPRA requires:- students to complete an International Criminal History Check. There are two AHPRA-approved providers for this, so please see this link for further information: https://www.ahpra.gov.au/Registration/Registration-Process/Criminal-history-checks/International-Criminal-History.aspx.
- After completing this, students will need to put the reference number for the criminal check application on the APOS-76 form.
- a curriculum vitae (CV) along with the APOS-76 form. They have a standard format that they prefer for this, so please see this link for this format: https://www.ahpra.gov.au/Registration/Registration-Process/Standard-Format-for-Curriculum-Vitae.aspx.
- students will also have to provide transcripts from past degrees with the application. If these transcripts are not in English, they will need to be translated. The APOS-76 form has details about this.
- AHPRA will also require evidence of meeting English language requirements. Again, there is information about this process on the APOS-76 form, and students should already have completed this prior to applying for a CMI course.
- a APS report about equivalency of qualifications, so that AHPRA know that the APS have deemed past qualifications to be commensurate with relevant years of APAC-accredited studies.
- plus provide evidence of enrolment in the relevant CMI course e.g. Master of Professional Psychology, so AHPRA are aware that student are applying for provisional registration as part of the relevant program.
- This whole process can take a quite a while and is often delayed, so best to apply at soon as you can.
