Managing enrolment, fees and completion for placements and projects (e.g. thesis) which extend over multiple teaching periods or semesters can be very complex. For this reason many courses have ‘progressive units’ examples include MPP560 and MPP562 in the MPP program, or the DPsych thesis units, and the MPPP internship units (INT600, INT601, INT602, INT603).
Progressive units are enrolled in across multiple sequential semesters or teaching periods, but the first unit or units are not officially complete until the final unit in the sequence is also complete.
Enrolment for progressive units
Enrolment for your progressive units is handled as a manual administrative enrolment. This means that you cannot enrol yourself in your later units, we will do this for you subject to satisfactory progression in the placement or thesis process (as confirmed by your Placement Coordinator or Thesis Supervisor).
You do not normally need to do anything for this to occur although your thesis or placement supervisor may want to check in with you at the end of the first semester – different supervisors and situations will manage the satisfactory progress check in different ways.
You will then be concurrently enrolled in both units until the placement or thesis is completed, finalised and assessed.
Completing a progressive placement or thesis sequence
The prior units in a progressive sequence will remain at ‘enrolled’ status on your transcripts and records until all of the required units are complete. Once you have formally complete all of the requirements for your progressive sequence (e.g. finished the placement and submitted all of the paperwork to myPlacement/Canvas etc) then all of the units in the sequence will be formally updated to complete at that time.
If the unit is graded only the final unit will have a mark and grade, the other units will be noted as ‘CP’ or ‘Completed Pass’. For more information on checking your results see Viewing Results in Paradigm.

Withdrawing from a progressive unit
How your progressive unit status is managed if you withdraw from the course will depend on a range of factors including how much work you have done, and the date of withdrawal.
If you do decide to withdraw or take a break, it is important that you remember to formally withdraw before the next census date in the progression (even if you are too late for a refund in the first or earlier units). This is because enrolment in the next unit is automatic once you have enrolled in the first unit (the two or more units are a combined package and must both or all be undertaken to complete the requirements).

Exceptions
Some courses (e.g. the MPsych(Clin) and the BPsych(Hons) theses or the Counselling Placements in the C&P programs) have structured the thesis or placements in such a way that the two or more units are prerequisite instead of co-requisite or progressive. In those cases progressive unit status does not apply because each unit has a distinct set of learning objectives and assessment criteria.
